Blinds & patio shading for Stellenbosch
About twenty minutes inland from Strand up the R44 — a valley town of heritage Cape Dutch and Georgian homes in the centre, and newer security estates and wine-farm residences on its edges, all sitting still enough of the coastal wind to run hot in summer.
A valley town, not a coastal one
Ringed by the Stellenbosch, Simonsberg and Helderberg mountains, the town sits in a valley that traps summer heat far more than it lets in a cooling sea breeze — Strand's low, raking sun problem becomes Stellenbosch's straightforward high-summer heat-load problem instead, with hot, still afternoons the main thing a window has to answer to.
Heritage windows in the centre
Much of central Stellenbosch's oldest housing stock — the gabled, thatched and Georgian-fronted homes around Dorp Street and the historic core — sits under heritage overlay, meaning exterior changes to street-facing elevations typically need heritage-committee sign-off. We spec sympathetically here: aluminium venetians or blockout rollers mounted inside the existing frame rather than anything that alters the window's street-facing appearance.
Wine-estate residences and new security clusters
Further from the centre, Stellenbosch's growth has been in wine-estate residential developments and gated clusters, most with their own architectural guidelines on visible exterior colours and fittings — similar in principle to an estate like Erinvale, checked before we finalise a quote.
- Valley heat, not coastal wind — hot, still summer afternoons
- Heritage overlay on much of the historic town centre
- Inside-the-frame fitting preferred on street-facing heritage windows
- Wine-estate and cluster developments with their own guidelines
